What this is all about in a nutshell –
I will be doing the Hever Castle Triathlon on 22nd September 2018. I will be doing this just over two years after my breast cancer diagnosis so it’s a pretty big milestone – hopefully by then I will be two years clear with no sign of recurrence.
.
I would really appreciate your help raising money for YouCan – Youth Cancer Support, an amazing charity that has helped me so much throughout my diagnosis and beyond.
If you want some more in-depth details –
As many of you know at the end of 2016 my life went a bit shit (to put it mildly!) when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of just 31. I had a lumpectomy which removed the tumour successfully – my first ever operation. Scary stuff. But that was just the beginning.
2017 was a year of treatment for me that kicked off with 6 cycles of FEC chemotherapy (feccing chemo), then 20 rounds of radiotherapy. I now have to take hormone therapy for the next 10 years of my life, which is a preventative measure recommended by my doctors as my tumour fed off oestrogen.
All of this has caused by body to change dramatically – I put on 2 ½ stone (cheers steroids!), I lost all my hair and my self esteem and confidence were at an all time low. I just didn’t trust my body any more.
YouCan – Youth Cancer Support was there for me all throughout my treatment and beyond. Amongst many other forms of support, they gave me a personal trainer. Those of you who know me well know that exercise really isn’t my bag but it’s the only thing that’s scientifically proven to reduce recurrence of cancer – and I’m all for that!
Then I was offered a place to do a triathlon with a team of amazing
ladies who have also had breast cancer, Team Phoenix. I’m sure I’m totally bonkers for even attempting this but I am excited to have something to work towards after active treatment. This is going to be an incredible personal challenge for me. I’ve started training and it’s a struggle with the side effects from my treatment, mainly fatigue. But I also can’t believe that this time last year I couldn’t climb the stairs without getting out of breath and now I’m going to attempt a 400m swim, a 20k bike ride then a 4k run!
I would really appreciate your support, hence my long waffle on above and this fundraising page! Anything you donate will go towards supporting young people impacted by cancer, like me.
YouCan’s support has been invaluable and I would love to help them support more young people in my position. Their services – counselling, complimentary therapies, exercise programs, amazing holiday home, support group just to name a few – are vital for young people with cancer. A portion of the money raised here will go towards putting another woman through training with Team Phoenix next year so you will be supporting two amazing charities which have helped get my life back after cancer.
