Youthline Fundraiser - 24hr Relay · 20 November 2021

Youthline supports young people across Aotearoa / New Zealand. We provide a 24/7 helpline, online mentoring, leadership, and training. We are a registered Charity of 50 volunteers plus a small support staff. We encourage young people to be involved and lead in our communities.

Story

Over the COVID-19 period, Youthline had an increase in the number of mental health related calls, and a decrease in the number of available volunteers to assist with these. As a result, there has been a shortage in funding for Youthline.

I, Cat Sambrook, on behalf of Burnham Military Camp want to raise money for Youthline Central South Island through a 24-hour Run/Walk Relay over the period 20th Nov - 21st Nov 2021, in Burnham, Christchurch.

We will be taking an entry fee from each team that registers to take part, and will be encouraging individuals to try to gain donations for their efforts in this event. This combined with donations and events on the day will hopefully result in a large donation where all proceeds will go to Youthline.

We want to raise this money for the youth of New Zealand as these are the young adults that will be the future mums, dads, community leaders, leaders of business, leaders of the NZDF and leaders of this country. Why would we not want to help with building a strong resilient youth now?

You may be asking why I, Cat Sambrook, want to do this. Well this is my why.
Last year on the 5th September 2019, my mother took her own life. She had been battling mental health and illness her whole life and sadly she lost the battle.
She left behind three kids all serving in the military, two grandchildren, a mum, dad, brother, husband as well as many other family and friends.
I firmly believe that if she had early intervention as a child through a support network like Youthline, she would have had a greater chance of survival and been better equipped to win her battle with mental health and illness when she was an adult.

I don’t want Youthline to stop their support for youth in New Zealand, as they, along with other non-profit support networks, need to continue these efforts. I would like to believe that if these services were as readily available during my mother’s childhood as they are today, she would have had a better chance.
