Story
THE RACE
Joe Bischler and Chris Hope-Jones are competing in the Yukon1000 expedition kayak race in July-August 2014. This is the longest kayak race in the world, BY FAR. The race distance is over a staggering 1000 miles (1600km) going from Whitehorse (Canada) to the Dalton Highway (Alaska) and is easily three times longer than any other kayak race in the world.
It’s ranked in the "top 50 most punishing races" in the world and THE "toughest race in paddle sports of all time."
It is best described as an expedition race. We will be completely self-sufficient along the course, carrying all supplies with us and not stopping till we cross the finish line. This race involves 18hours of solid paddling for between 7-21days, while camping along route, avoiding bears, whitewater rapids, and extreme weather conditions ranging from -15C to 45C and winds capable of creating 1.5m high waves.
We'll be traveling through the remote areas of Canada’s Yukon territory all the way to Alaska. We will receive no assistance if we get into trouble and will be on our own to deal with any problems ourselves.
THE CHARITY
We are doing this to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice in memory of the assistance they gave Trevor Hyden during his battle with cancer. St Luke’s Hospice provides specialist end of life care to over 3,500 patients a year from across Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall. They are a small, but absolutely superb charity, doing sensational work.
