Plymouth Half Marathon 2010 · 30 May 2010 ·

AfriCat UK is a registered charity. We predominantly support and raise awareness of the AfriCat Foundation and The Namibian Lion Trust. Our Goal: “The conservation and preservation of fauna in Africa in particular by funding and supporting the development and implementation of programmes to conserve and protect the large carnivores of Namibia. To advance education in the conservation, protection, and improvement of the physical and natural environment.” Since 2014, AfriCat UK (UK Charity Commission Number 1120026) has supported The AfriCat Foundation and The Namibian Lion Trust (Formerly AfriCat North). AfriCat UK raises funds for the various programs that have been developed by the Namibian charities to assist in research of key species, research of solutions to Human Wildlife Conflict, and the education of local communities in Namibia. We have successfully funded research that has assisted in the better understanding of the Cheetah, Pangolin, Leopard, Lion, and Hyenas. AfriCat UK have funded the building of a school for local communities to improve the link in conservation and education for future generations. Many world renowned veterinary clinicians have based their research and resultant doctorates on the animals and facilities that can be found at the two charities in Namibia that we continue to fund. The importance of this research allows for wide-spread conservation initiatives that impact species globally.

Story

So quote of the year, my best friend Billy (gareth) " Er Zo i think maybe you should start running for taxi's first before doing the half marathon!" . This was Billys response to me shortly after I had announced that i wanted to do it in memory of my Dads friend Steve Groves who died last year of Cancer.

My Dad and Steve went to the Falklands conflict over 28 years ago with the Cardre, an elite band of Royal Marines who were given the task of getting rid of the Argentine Special Forces. The attack on Top Marlow House (a house on the islands which the argintine special forces were working from) is legendary within the bootneck community. The attack was successful but Steve got shot in the attack. He survived and after leaving the Marines started a life in Namibia. My Dad along with Steves family were crushed by his passing and i wanted to do something in memory of Steve. I asked Steves partner what chairty would be fitting and she has choosen AfriCat which is a charity in Namibia working with big cats. I hope to go out and visit the charity this summer and report back about the work they do.

I plan to run the half marathon dressed as a cheetah and hoping that A: its not as hot as last year. B: I dont completely die and C: Billys bbq afterwards better be as good as he says!!!

Thanks y'all i expect to see you all on the finishing line in one piece :)

Here is some info about AfriCat:

AfriCat UK helps to fund the work of the AfriCat Foundation, a Namibian non-profit organisation that promotes the tolerance of large carnivores among the farming community, supports communal area conservation initiatives and promotes environmental education programmes to the youth of Namibia.

Having started out as a small animal welfare organisation in the 1990’s, the AfriCat Foundation is now recognised as the world’s largest environmental predator conservation programme, which works predominately with local farming communities, commercial livestock farmers, game farmers and the youth of Namibia, providing answers for community conservation issues, environmental education programmes, human wildlife conflict issues, predator release sites and research.  The work of the AfriCat Foundation regularly features on global television and in the international media and has been endorsed by celebrities such as Joanna Lumley, Alan Davies, Lorraine Kelly, Pam St Clement, Kate Humble and Ben Fogle.
