ALK-positive lung cancer is a rare disease that often affects younger non-smokers, many with young children. It is usually diagnosed at Stage 4, when there is no cure. We support, empower and advocate for best practice to improve the overall survival and quality of life of patients across the UK.

Story

We are taking part in the Glasgow Kiltwalk in memory of our beautiful Robyn who lost her battle with ALK+ lung cancer on 3rd January 2025. We will be walking 'The Big Stroll' which is a total of 14 miles from Clydebank to Balloch on Saturday 26th April 2025. Your support means the world to us! ❤️

ALK-positive lung cancer is a rare, incurable non-small cell lung cancer that's caused by a mutation in the ALK gene.

The ALK mutation is found in approximately 4% of all lung cancer cases, but it's present in around 30% of younger non-smoking patients.

Half of all UK ALK+ lung cancer patients get diagnosed before the age of 50 - many are in their 30s and 40s, some in their 20s and even teenagers. The majority are female. Most patients are diagnosed at stage 4.

Lung cancer in never-smokers is the eighth most common cause of lung-related deaths, with more deaths than ovarian cancer, cervical cancer or leukaemia.

Robyn worked tirelessly to raise awareness because her symptoms were dismissed for almost a year. She never even received an x-ray until it was too late and she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. It is crucial that the medical profession be vigilant to the possibility of lung cancer in never-smokers, particularly adenocarcinoma which can occur due to genetic mutations. Early diagnosis with imaging is pivotal to good outcomes.
