Shi Tao, a poet and journalist was imprisoned for 10 years just for sending an email to a Chinese pro-democracy website containing an article describing the Chinese government’s instructions to Chinese journalists on how to cover the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown.

Tens of thousands of people are detained in the People's Republic of China in violation of their human rights. Broadly defined 'state secrets' offences are used to prosecute human rights defenders, journalists and Internet users for circulating or expressing opinions critical of the government.

In March 2008, I am abandoning the comfort of my sofa and trekking to the Everest Base camp to raise money and awareness for this cause, and for all the valuable work that Amnesty do all over the world. Basically this means 11 days of high altitude trekking (up to 5545m), basic camping rations, and toilet facilities that will comprise of little more than a hole in the ground!! Yes, I think I might have actually gone mad, but hey, its all in a good cause!!
