Story

Dear Friends,

just briefly about my aim to raise money for Parkinson’s UK:

In 2009, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that impairs motor skills, cognitive processes and other functions. This is caused by the loss of brain cells that produce Dopamine, which has many functions in the brain.

I had developed many symptoms over a long period of time which I ignored or put down to stress. Then one day everything just came to ahead and I paid a long overdue visit to the doctor.

It was a long, drawn out wait to be referred to a neurologist but after a few simple exercises and tests in the clinic, I was formally diagnosed with Parkinson's. In the beginning, my condition was described as 'Atypical' and I was told that I might not respond to medication. I then had to wait for further tests and scans to confirm the diagnoses and to see how far the damage to my brain cells had progressed.

Meanwhile 'Parkinson's UK' answered my plea for help as a newly diagnosed sufferer of a condition that I knew nothing about. I was assigned a lovely lady called Pam that came to see me straight away with practical advice, booklets and all the help and the emotional support that I needed to initially come to terms with my condition.

I did eventually respond positively to medication and I am currently managing my condition quite well. Pam still calls me on a regular basis and I wish to thank Parkinson's UK and sponsors for enabling me to receive this continual support.

Most fund raisers perform extraordinary feats for sponsorship when they feel well enough but right now, I am unable to find a suitable physical challenge within my grasp. Until that time, I hope that my story is enough to prove my conviction and determination to raise awareness of PD and money for research and new sufferers.

All donations will be greatly received as just giving a little will help a lot.

Here are just a few examples of how your support can make a difference for people with my condition.

Parkinson's.

·     £2 is enough to pay for a DVD 'Being There' to be sent to someone recently diagnosed with Parkinson's.

·     £26 could pay for a nurses to answer calls on a helpline for an hour.

·     £150 is enough to fund a Parkinson's nurse for a day to provide specialist care for people with the condition.

·     £1,000 could fund a cutting edge research project for a week.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page, for reading this message and for passing it on to anyone that you think might be interested. Please visit again for regular updates.
