Veteran racing driver marks his 80th Birthday with a race in aid of St. Michael’s Hospice.
Gordon Rae from Malvern will be racing in ‘Formula Vee’ astonishingly just weeks after he turns 80. He has been building cars and racing them since he was young and wanted to give something back to the hospice that looked after his partner Elsie as she struggled against cancer during the last few months of her life in 1988.
Gordon is a well loved character in and around Malvern, and to be still in physical fitness to own a racing driver licence is a huge achievement in itself. He is one of the oldest men in the UK to have a racing licence! It has been nine years since his last competitive race and so he is excited for the challenge on the road ahead.
The ‘pensioner’, who has been a scientist all his life, enjoys paragliding, yachting, sculling, and singing in a choir, as well as being a keen cyclist he designs, builds and fly’s model airplanes and has a published book on the subject.
His Grand-daughter Emily Hird says “it’s really great that he’s racing for such a good cause, I can’t wait to see the look on the younger drivers faces when he takes his helmet off after hopefully beating them!”
The race date will be confirmed soon!
