We campaign, support and fund research to stop people dying of bowel cancer

Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

In March 2016, just 11 months after we married, and 6 months after her diagnoses I lost my wife and best friend Harriet to bowel cancer. In her memory, I together with friends will be climbing Kilimanjaro in August 2017. Between now and then we'll be fundraising on behalf of Bowel Cancer UK.

Bowel Cancer UK — 'Never Too Young':

Bowel Cancer UK has been working hard to create change for younger bowel cancer patients since the launch of their 'Never Too Young' campaign in 2013. The campaign is giving younger patients a voice and changing clinical practice and policy to stop bowel cancer in people under 50. Every year 2,400 younger people are diagnosed with bowel cancer in the UK, the majority already at stage 3 or 4 of the disease. Research has shown that younger bowel cancer patients have a very different experience of diagnosis, treatment and care. By supporting us you will help fund much-needed new research, new clinical and policy guidance and improve diagnostic services for young people with bowel cancer.

Climbing Kilimanjaro:

Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain in the world standing at 5,895m above sea level. It's formed by three volcanoes, Shira, Mawenzi and Kibo, but it's the Uhuru Peak on the volcano of Kibo that marks the summit of the mountain and the highest point in Africa.

We'll be climbing the Lemosho trail to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Entering the park from the west, the trail rises steeply above the cloud line, bringing us onto the Shira Plateau at 3,900m. Eventually, the Lemosho Route joins the Machame, Shira and Umbwe routes to approach the summit from the south via the Karanga Valley and Barafu.
