Story

Sea turtles, after hatching on the shoreline, have to get to the sea quickly otherwise predators snatch them up. If they hatch in the day, only 0.01% succeed and stay alive. One day a little girl was walking along the shoreline, and saw these turtles, took pity on them, and started throwing them into the sea. One by one, she picked them up and gave them life. A woman came along the beach and saw the little girl doing this, and questioned her...

"What are you doing? You can't make a difference, you're just one person!"

The little girl stopped. The little girl looked at the woman. She turned around and picked up another, and threw it in the sea.

"I made a difference to that one."

Such is charity.

In the Summer of 2012, in support of two fantastic charities; The Burma Education Partnership, and FutureSense, I will be venturing to Cambodia, with 15 others. The trip will involve 3 weeks of construction work and teaching English in a local school in Samraong. Teaching is a challenging but rewarding experience. We will be lesson planning ourselves, with the aim of providing fun classes to help improve the children’s English.

I have to raise £2500, half of which goes directly to the charities, and half of which pays for my flights, food, accommodation, and sweat and tears whilst I'm on the three week project. Every donation, however small, is significant, so I thank you in advance if you decide to donate. I need so much support for this venture, and I'd be incredibly grateful if you could donate for me.

After the three week project, we have two weeks of leisure time in Cambodia, but this is funded solely by me, so your money would only be going to the charitable side, rather than the "Let's have a Cambodian party" side!

The Charities:

The Burma Education Partnership (BEP) is an educational charity which works in the Burmese Refugee camps along the Thai-Burmese border. 130,000 people from the Karen ethnic group are living as refugees in these camps, so BEP provides English teachers to the numerous make-shift school, and are gradually trying to develop a curriculum, whilst supporting and training existing teachers. Durham University Charities Kommittee (DUCK), has fully funded their Mobile Teacher Programme (MTP), which enabled the BEP to reach more school by providing group training sessions to the Burmese teachers, followed up with one-to-one support in their classrooms. The latest project, the "Karen Curriculum Development Programme" aims to re-write the Karen English Language Curriculum used in the camps...

The FutureSense Foundation is the link to the project in Cambodia. They partner over 100 non-profit organizations across the world and contribute in the areas of education, women's empowerment, livelihoods, community development, child care and health care. Financial support is provided by the charity to support the projects. Any support could be basic resources like infrastructure for schools or grants to build livelihoods. It's a global charity, working in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and South America. Put simply, they promote the development of local communities and individuals through ethically run volunteer placements. Their website is below:
