Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Justin Holmes, Kevin Atterbury and Carl Moore will be attempting and hopefully successfully completing the 3 Peaks Challenge on 9th – 10th June 2010 in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Some of you may know, and some may not, that Justin’s 4 year old daughter, Abigail, was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was born. Abigail looks and often behaves like any normal, healthy, 4 year old child and her parents, Justin and Jo, are keen to give her the quality of life that any child deserves. However Abigail has to undergo many tests to identify complications of CF and to monitor disease progression. X rays and CAT scans are common and used to examine the lungs for signs of damage or infection. Abigail also has to take a multitude of medication on a daily basis to control the disease. There is no cure for CF and most individuals with Cystic Fibrosis die young — many in their 20s and 30s from lung failure. Ultimately, lung transplantation is often necessary as CF worsens. We all remain positive that a cure will be found. Cystic fibrosis is a common hereditary disease which affects the entire body, causing progressive disability and a short life expectancy. Difficulty breathing is the most serious symptom and results from frequent lung infections that are treated, though not cured, by antibiotics and other medications. CF is caused by a mutation in a gene called the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). This gene helps create sweat, digestive juices, and mucus. Although most people without CF have two working copies of the CFTR gene, only one is needed to prevent cystic fibrosis. CF develops when neither gene works normally. We are undertaking this challenge in order to raise much needed funds for the complex research to find a cure for this disease. We would also like to raise public awareness for Cystic Fibrosis as many people are still unaware of this disease and ultimately, the seriousness of the condition. The 3 Peaks Challenge is to ascend the 3 highest Peaks in , and within a period of 24 hours. We will start our challenge at 5pm on Wednesday 9th June at the foot of Ben Nevis in Scotland and hopefully finish before 5pm on Thursday 10th June at the bottom of Snowdon in Wales. It will take approx. 5 hours to ascend and descend Ben Nevis. At 10pm we will start our long car journey to Scaffell Pike in the Lake District. This should take about 7 hours. At 5am we will begin a steep hike to the highest peak in England. This should take about 5 hours and our ascent will be approx. 977m. Back in the car at 10am we will then travel 3 hours to Snowdon in Wales. With the finish line in our sight we will hike to the summit at 1pm and finish the challenge back in the car park before 5pm. The walk is estimated to take 4 hours. The walk will total approximately 26 miles and we will ascend about 3400m. The car journey between the peaks will be about 500 miles and is estimated to take about 10 hours.
