In the first two weeks of October I shall be embarking on the longest walk of my life. I will be walking the Great Wall of China to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Society to assist them in 'Leading the fight against dementia'.

The Great Wall of China is so vast that it would apparently take a year to walk the whole thing, so I will clearly only be walking part of it. I have not been given the exact distance we will be undertaking but over six days we will be walking for an approximate total for 34 hours, whilst also using the local transportation to travel to bed down for the night....on one day this is up to 4.5 hours.

The Chinese Government have restored parts of the Wall which feature as the main tourist attraction. We shall spend some small parts of our walk in these areas but we will mainly be covering parts that have weathered, as it was built between 1368-1644 (The Ming Dynasty). The sides and even some Wall are missing (I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I don't fall off). 

Please know this is not a jolly or a beano...there are no pubs, shops or even toilets on the Wall. As you can see from my picture the terrain is mountains and valleys so the Wall is mainly made up of stairs, so this will be the biggest workout of my life... not to mention dettox!!!

I have personally found dementia to be an upsetting and drawn out disease for both the sufferer and for their families, I am doing this in memoriam of my darling 'Little Nan' to help other families that are dealing with this illness.

As dementia is not yet recognised by the UK Government, the funding for research is tiny in comparison to other diseases, so every penny really does count for them.

So please pop your hand in your wallet/purse/pocket and even the back of the sofa and donate to this worthy cause...but please do not max out your credit card...what you can afford is 'GREAT!'
