Story

My brilliant father, Horace Roy Plowright, finally lost his long battle with Alzheimer's Disease on 20th November 2015, the day before his 89th birthday. I have set up this page to collect donations in his memory for the Lord Whisky Sanctuary Fund, a local charity that rescues and re-homes animals; a charity he supported and the place that gave us our much loved dog, Zoey.

I will match every donation made here with an equal donation to AgeUK Canterbury, which has supported my Dad (and Mum) through his long decline through dementia.

I would be grateful for any donation in his memory, however small, to help them with their work, and to say thank you for the surprising gift of the love of a small dog, which has held me together in this horrible year.

Why An Animal Charity?

Dad loved animals - it's that simple. It was when he was interacting with an animal that you best saw his gentle, kind, calm nature, and his knack of putting anyone at ease - whether two-legged or four.

He remembered and told stories about every animal who crossed his path - he worked with lab animals in his first job, making friends with a very bad tempered Mandrill called Bill. He owned a white rat called Pete who travelled in his shirt everywhere - and rode around on the handlebars of his bike. He once accidentally taught a Budgie to sing, getting a girlfriend in trouble. He told a brilliant and typically bawdy story about the time he learned you should never feed a horse plums before a long ride in a delivery waggon. He always had a dog - the three Nippies, Peppi, Topsy and Zoey, who would accompany him on his late night rounds of his laboratories. He delighted in teaching kids about science and the natural world.

As his dementia worsened, his love for Zoey would still cut through the disease and bring him back - he'd smile, and make a fuss of her, even if he couldn't remember she was his dog. Some of his last lucid conversations were memories of the many animals he'd loved throughout his life. Zoey even visited him in hospital for gentle pats in the last week of his life.

Why Lord Whisky?

Zoey is a stray rescued from the Canary Islands, and found her home with Dad via the Lord Whisky sanctuary. Dad and Mum volunteered with them, running information stalls at their summer fêtes and fundraising for the charity - helping animals was his first passion and his last.

The Lord Whisky Sanctuary Fund is a lifeline for animals of all kinds. They provide sanctuary to animals who become homeless or who have been injured or abused, and vital veterinary care to those on low incomes.
