Story

This page has been created in memory of Gunner Jay Newman.

A little bit about Jay - Jay was a bubbly, funny, and caring person. He made so many people proud by what he had overcome in his life.

Before Jay joined the Army as a Regular Soldier, he was a member of Royal Signals Reserve within 887 Troop, 64 Signal Squadron, 37 Signal Regiment in Nottingham.

Following his time as an Army Reserve, Jay went onto complete his basic training at Army Training Regiment Pirbright, passing out in April 2016. Jay then went onto Phase 2 (trade training) at Larkhill which is where the Royal Regiment of Artillery are located.

After training Jay was posted to 22 (Gibraltar 1779-1783) Battery RA, part of 32 Regiment Royal Artillery, and later joined 74 Battery (The Battle Axe Company) RA, and was posted to 47 Regiment RA.

Jay was an active member of the Nottingham Royal Artillery Association (RAA) and got involved in lots of our activities such as trips to the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres. He recently laid a wreath from the Nottingham RAA at the repatriation ceremony of a WW1 soldier. Jay was also was part of the Newbury RAA branch.

Jay suffered from mental illness and sadly took his own life on 31st October 2019. It is hoped the money raised will assist in providing essential support to service personnel and their families.

SSAFA is the UK's oldest national tri-service military charity.

The money raised through this page will go towards helping service personnel and veterans that are struggling with depression, anxiety and PTSD, or any other mental health illness.
