RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour search and rescue service all around the UK and Ireland, while lifeguards keep a careful watch on the UK’s busiest beaches. RNLI lifesaving and drowning prevention depend on supporter fundraising and the generous donations that you and others give.

Story

Losing a loved one at a young age is never easy, especially when you know they still had so much to do in their lives. Losing our brother, Angus John or Dian as he was known, after a short illness on 18 December 2008, left us feeling exactly like that. He is still sorely missed by us all and forever will be.

There is no doubt about the impact he made on our lives and on those that knew him. However, after only 38 years he never really got the chance to leave a long-lasting legacy, something he would have sorely liked to have done.

In July and August this year, I (and maybe some family members) will run 40k (4x10k) to raise funds in what would have been his 40th year, to make sure Angus can have that lasting impact. This is something we know he would have been very proud of (but also very embarrassed about at the same time).

Angus was fiercely proud of his Isle of Barra roots and despite being away for many years, never really lost touch or his desire to get home as often as possible.

So.... we are raising funds for two causes - one on Barra and one national charity which relates to his island roots:

1. The RNLI is a national charity that saves lives at sea. The volunteers that crew the Lifeboats provide a selfless and courageous service, often putting their own lives at risk to save others. Having been brought up in an island fishing community, Angus, as we all do, appreciated the vital service they provide to our coastal communities. They are entirely funded by donations, without which they would not be able to provide the brilliant service they currently do.

2. Garadh a Bhagh a Tuath (Northbay Garden) is a local social enterprise on Barra providing opportunities for all on the island. It is a brilliant venture delivering high quality organic produce to the Barra community and without the support of the community it would not exist. The Garadh is not on this site, and sponsorship is being done locally in the old fashioned form-filling way.

The 10k runs being done are:

-         24th July ~ Musselburgh (my sister Flo will do this with me to get me going). = COMPLETED IN 49MINS AND 5SECS

-         1st August ~ Scottish Gas/City of Edinburgh = COMPLETED IN 48MINS AND 50SECS

-         7th August ~ Skye Bridge = COMPLETED IN 48MINS AND 43SECS

-         29th August ~ Perth = COMPLETED IN 49MINS AND 04SECS
