Story
Thanks for getting as far a my fundraising page.
I've put a bit more detail into this since so many people have responded so positively.
I have set this page up to enable you to sponsor me quickly and efficiently and I would be interested to hear your feedback if you find this not to be the case.
January - Update
On holiday in Brazil at the beach meant that I could start my training in earnest after time off, more than a few huge meals and plenty of drinks over Christmas. I started running barefoot on the beach in front of the house in Saquarema. The first couple of days were really really tough. I struggled to keep going on the wet sand (it had been raining) and got some nasty rashes where my lardy skin was rubbing together...
After a couple of days the rain let up and I got a real shock trying to match the distance and pace on dry sand which was like treacle but it really gave me time to reflect on what I had taken on and how much benefit to me and others would come from this pain....
I pushed on and managed to increase the distance each day which made me feel much better and progressively more confident. Eventually I was able to run as far as the next town which I guess was about 4 miles away, then turn around and head back. I would often think of what a contrast it was going to be running in Brighton. Running in the height of summer, on the white sand with the aquamarine sea beside me and all of the amazing wildlife I would encounter really helped me focus.
February - Update
Struggled to get into training at home because the weather was so bad but I got to the gym and used the treadmill and weight machines. Cycled as much as I could including some very long trips to do errands around London. Managed 18 miles one day which was tough but exhilarating. My mate Steve who was a champion runner was very supportive and bought me some great running shoes as an advance birthday present which was a huge boost. Managed to get off the treadmill and started running with Ben and Lisa some Sunday mornings which was great and getting runs into double figures really helped me confidence. I would cycle five miles to meet them, run for 10-12 miles and then cycle home. The first time I did it Lucy had a lovely place of hot pasta waiting for me which was fabulous. I was very sore but took a shower and went right to bed for a couple of hours and was delighted to be able to get up and not feel too bad.
March - Update
Training has gone well, my left knee and lower back are my weak spots so i have not pushed myself as hard as I might have with my running. I'm not playing down the size of the physical and mental challenge ahead. I have sent out emails to as many people as I can to drum up support and realizing to make it round just over 26 miles, I'll be digging deeper than ever before so and I'm going to ask you to do dig into your wallet.
April - Update
Huge thanks to everyone who has made a donation to support me and WaterAid so far. Even with all the training I was getting seriously worried about the task ahead but the excitement of getting such a positive response has put me in the right frame of mind to take this on wholeheartedly. I'm practicing as much Bikram Yoga as I can which is really helping with my flexibility, strength, stamina and determination and running outdoors on tarmac and cross country - which has been very muddy! I've been working out in the gym with weights and doing short interval runs on the treadmill where I run as fast as I can for a minute then drop down to a regular pace for a minute and keeping that up for as long as I can. Still got niggling problems with my knee and lower back but I'm psyching myself up. Some days I feel great, other days not so great but with a week and a half to go I am conserving energy and keeping the training light from here in.
I got my 'race pack' in the post at the end of last week, my runners number is 12813. Lucy has been amazingly supportive of my efforts, encouraging me to get out of the house to train and washing and preparing my kit which makes a big difference when you are exhausted!
Please keep an eye on this site for updates.
