Every day in the UK, another 240 people wake up to the catastrophic impact of a stroke. The Stroke Association is the only charity in the UK providing lifelong support for all stroke survivors and their families.

Story

Anyone who knows me knows how breakable I am: I'd injure myself in the shower and break bones while bowling.

My Grandmas however, were a different kind.

Inspirationally strong women, I saw one helplessly robbed of her resilience by strokes.

My other Grandma selflessly raised a family on her own when my Grandad suffered a fatal aneurysm when my Dad was just a boy.

So this Summer I want to do them proud and in the process, I might even shake off my tag as Owen Hargreaves' more injury-prone brother.

That's why I'm going to tackle Mount Rinjani - a 3,726m Goliath of Indonesia. Never heard of it? Neither had I. And now I kind of wish I hadn't.

Towering at three times the size of Snowdon and half the size of Everest, you could pile four Burj Khalifas on top of each other and still not be at its summit.

The hike will be a gruelling four day, three night test of my strength, determination and sheer stubbornness to reach the top camping above the clouds in near freezing while hiking in thirty degree tropical sun.

So that's where I need you - good, generous people - to help spur me on to the summit and conquer Rinjani with a fraction of the strength my Grandmas showed while helping other people never have to see their loved ones crumbled by this terrible condition.

Please dig as deep as you can and help eliminate strokes from tearing apart over 150,000 families a year.

I'll also be updating my blog with an account/video of it if/when I get back - https://jsmclaughlin1.wordpress.com/
