Addisons is an autoimmune disease where your body has attacked your adrenal glands to the point where you no longer produce the hormones you take for granted every single day because they keep you alive.
Cortisol -
• wakes you up in the morning (high levels)
• helps you go to sleep at night (low levels)
• helps you cope with stress when adrenaline has done its job
• manages how your body uses carbohydrates, fats and proteins
• keeps inflammation down
• regulates appetite, blood sugar and food matabolism
Aldosterone -
• balances sodium and potassium in the blood
• regulates blood pressure
• regulates fluid balance
Usually misdiagnosed as eating disorders, alcoholism and depression.
Keeley was 9 stone, tanned, had hair falling out in clumps, couldn't eat due to retching, was constantly exhausted, had dizzy spells and had spasms in her legs in the middle of the night.
Luckily, the first doctor she met at the hospital asked the right questions, ordered the right tests and speculated she had Addison's Disease. It took weeks of tests because its not easy to diagnose. She was started on steroids immediately to keep her alive and this was soon increased to 2 types to replace the hormones her body no longer produces.
Keeley will not let this disease win Keeley will continue to fight every single day to work and play.
That's why I'm raising money for this amazing charity, raising awareness of this rare condition and inspiring anyone struggling with a medical condition to get up each and every day and fight!! For everyone out there with a hidden condition, you are amazing and we can do this.
