Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I've been lucky enough to gain a place on the Clipper Round the World Yacht race (http://clipperroundtheworld.com/) and so decided to rise to the challange. I've never sailed, lived on a boat or even crossed an ocean on a yacht! Mesothelioma (asbestos cancer) is a little heard of disease and contracted by working with this material and breathing in the microfibres that are released. Sufferers don't know that they have this disease till 30-40 years later. By the time it is diagnosed life expectancy is 6 - 18 months. THERE IS NO CURE AND IS TERMINAL.Dad lost his battle after 14 months in 2013 and died at home surrounded by everyone he loved. I was lucky enough to say goodbye, tell him how much I love him and give him one last hug.
I miss him every day.
I'll be sailing from Australia - Vietnam - China - Seattle - Panama Canal - New York - Derry LondonDerry - Round Scotland - Europe - UK HOME!!!!
Over the next 12 months I'm going to be training in the gym, learning to sail, practising knots and generally turning myself into a seaworthy person! This is no walk in the park, with upto 35 days at sea, 4hr on, 4hr off, 24 hours a day shifts, this will test me to the limit. I will face all weather, all seas and with no personal space and trying to stay pleasant to my fellow crew, It really is the challenge of a lifetime!
The Mesothelioma Charity are fantastic. Offering help, information, much needed support and when needed just someone to talk too. During the hardest of times, this is a vital resource and more importantly FREE.Any donation that you're able to make will be amazing and will help sufferers/families. I'll be posting photos of my training, updates on the race and more importantly what boat I will be on, so you can follow my progress.A massive thank you.
