Story
Mr Jeremy Ockrim is Honorary Senior Lecturer at UCL and Consultant Urological Surgeon in Female and Reconstructive Surgery at University College Hospital, London.
Once again I have been persuaded to step outside of my comfort zone and take part in this years London Triathlon Team Olympic challenge. If the challenge of cycling 40k was not enough we also have a very competitive inter team competition going on with team captains Mr Dan Wood and Mr Jonathan McCullough leading teams representing Mitrofanoff Support UK and the Bladder and Bowel Foundation respectively.
This challenge is the first of its kind in that we have co-fundraisers taking part in the event... in Australia! Raising funds for Mitrofanoff Support Australia led by the charity’s co-founder Greg Solomon .
As team captain I will be ensuring that my esteemed colleague Ms. Tamsin Greenwell will be running the 10K in record time and Neville Parnell will manage the 1500 meter swim without armbands!
In 2009 along with a long term patient of mine at UCLH Neville Parnell we set the Parnell Fund a charity who’s aims are not only to raise vital funds for vital urology research at University College London Hospital (UCLH). for urological research but also break down one of the last taboo subjects of the 21st Century.
Although 15 to 20 per cent of the population has significant bladder issues, and five to 10 per cent of men as well as women have incontinence, these issues do not have the political tag of cancer, heart or women’s health
.But they cause more primary care attendances, huge hidden distress and socioeconomic burden than these other conditions combined.
We want to let people know that it is not something they have to live with, they can be treated and quality of life can be restored.
The charity also aims to raise awareness of urological health issues, which many of the 600,000 people affected by such conditions each year suffer in silence.
The money we will be raising will have a real and significant impact on our unit, the largest Centre of its kind in the UK and also raise awareness of urological health issues, which many of the 600,000 people affected by such conditions each year suffer in silence.
