Story
I’ve chosen Promise as my charity because I know that they do a wonderful job with children and young people. They have dedicated volunteers and provide amazing training to arm them with the tools to make a child or young persons life that little bit better. Mentors become someone children can depend and rely upon when they often have no one else fighting their corner.
With the recent shortage in children and adolescent mental health support I wanted to raise money to help a charity that also want to fight this corner.
Personally, looking back I realise maybe I needed this kind of support when I was a child. Hitting my teens I self harmed and even took overdoses. I was a messy person for a while before I had children! With the suicide rate increasing there has got to be a point where people realise prevention is better than cure. If young people get the support before they reach crisis point there will be less pain for them and their families to cope with, less self harm, self destruction and suicides, and hopefully less adult suicide.
So, as alcohol is my crutch and downfall, I’m hoping a month off and adjusting my lifestyle will help my mental health too, and raising money for Promise is an added bonus!
Please donate as little or as much as you can afford! Below is something that Ali wrote for me to share with you. Ali was a great mentor to me when I did my mentoring for children and young people. If you can’t donate money maybe you have a few hours a week you could donate to a child or young person?!
Thank you 😊
PROMISEworks is a Somerset based charity that recruits, trains and supports volunteer mentors to be matched with some of the counties most vulerable and disadvantaged children and young people.
The mentors meet regularly with their mentees for a period of at least 2 years and in that time often become the most consistent adult role model for them.
Mentors are used to provide support around mental health and wellbeing however within PROMISEworks we recognise that some young people need a little additional support to help them overcome some of the Adverse Childhood Experiences they may have had.
To enable us to offer this extra help we have a designated mental health fund within the charity and it's this fund that your sponsorship money will be going to......
