Story

I'm excited to be taking on the challenge of completing the 100k (63miles) South Coast Challenge on August 31st and finishing sometime (early) on the 1st September 2019.

will be raising much needed funds for Diabetes UK and any sponsorship would be hugely appreciated.....

For as long as I can remember diabetes has been part of normal family life and it can be hereditary so people who have a family history of the disorder are significantly more likely to develop diabetes.  3 generations of my family have battled this disease and my father was diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic and had to inject insulin 4 times day!  Although he did his best to manage the condition well, in June 2017 complications connected with diabetes took Dad away from us, far too soon and young.

Therefore I would love to raise money in his honour and my goal of £1750 will go towards much needed future research for a disease which sadly, is growing at an alarming rate.... Every 2 minutes someone is classed as being a diabetic.

But what is diabetes?    Diabetes is a serious, lifelong condition where your blood glucose level is too high. There are two main types,Type 1 and Type 2. They’re different conditions, but they’re both serious. There are some other rarer types of diabetes.

What causes diabetes?   What all types of diabetes have in common is that they cause people to have too much glucose (sugar) in their blood. But we all need some glucose. It’s what gives us our energy. We get glucose when our bodies break down the carbohydrates that we eat or drink. And that glucose is released into our blood.  We all need a hormone called insulin. It’s made by our pancreas, and it’s insulin that allows the glucose in our blood to enter our cells and fuel our bodies.

If you don’t have diabetes, your pancreas senses when glucose has entered your bloodstream and releases the right amount of insulin, so the glucose can get into your cells. But if you have diabetes, this system doesn’t work.
