The John Bowler Three Peaks Challenge in aid of Help For Heroes
On 28th/29th June 2014, some of our younger and fitter team members are undertaking the arduous Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for Help For Heroes.
The Three Peaks Challenge consists of climbing the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales – all within 24 hours.
The team will start their challenge at 2.00pm on Saturday 28th June as they begin their ascent of Ben Nevis in Scotland. Five hours later, they should be in the minibus for the 6 hour drive to their next mountain, Scafell Pike in England. They’ll start the climb of Scafell Pike at 1.00am on Sunday morning and hope to be back down again by 5.00am for the five hour drive to Snowdon. If everything runs to schedule the team will start their final ascent at 10.00am and will be completed by 2.00pm on Sunday afternoon – exactly 24 hours after first setting foot on Ben Nevis.
They will be ascending over 3,000 metres in total and covering a distance of 24½ miles as they navigate all three peaks.
The team will be pushing themselves to the limit, not just physically but mentally as well, as they struggle to manage with what little sleep they can grab on the minibus as they travel to the next mountain. Training is well underway as the team need to ensure they are capable of safely meeting the challenges they will face on the mountains.
The team consists of Greg Marsh, Tom Inman, Tom Studholme, Mark Allen, Sam Bowler, James Howarth & Mark Abbott (all field support), John Langton (IT manager), James Hopkinson (transport), Stewart Adams (Bowler Energy) and Andrew Watson (free range director). Those of you who know Mr Watson will no doubt be relieved to learn that his role within the team is limited purely to driving the minibus and has no plans whatsoever to set foot on a mountain!
Many people will be familiar with the work that Help For Heroes does. Their mission is to deliver an enduring national network of support for wounded servicemen and women and their families. The war in Afghanistan may be nearly over, but for those who have suffered life-changing injuries, their battles are just beginning and Help For Heroes is there to support them along the way.
