The John Flemming Memorial Cycle Challenge · 18 April 2008
Done it!!!!!!
Through Cornish towns, Shropshire hamlets, Lancashire cities and Scottish mountains we all did our bit. We closed the A9 and the Forth Bridge, stayed in some very dodgy hotels and learnt too much about the benefits of Sudacreme! We have drunk carb loaders, electrolyte replacers and eaten more energy bars than you can shake a stick at, but the best of all were the flapjacks and Guinness!!
As you may know the last 8 months or so have been very testing for the Evans household with both Annie and my Dad being diagnosed as having Cancer. Thankfully, both are well on the way to recovery and have shown tremendous strength of character in tackling this indescriminate illness.
We consider ourselves to have been lucky so far though. Last year, the brother of a friend of mine died of cancer aged just 53. In order to make something positive come out of yet another death to this dreadful illness, his brother has organised the John Fleming Memorial Cycle Challenge - a bike ride from Land's End to John O'Groats with the aim of raising money for cancer charities.
This is obviously a cause close to our hearts now, so, as both Annie and Dad's excellent prognosis owe so much to the huge amounts of research which has been carried out, I have now riden my bike over 300 miles as part of a team going from Lands End to John O’ Groats to raise as much money as possible for Cancer Research UK.
The event took place in mid June over 5 days with approximately 25 riders and support crew taking part. The event coverd about 860 miles and riders did the challenge individually or in teams. The furthest distance covered in a day was 200 miles.
We are looking to give all monies raised to a selection of cancer charities both large and small and to cancer support groups and our aim is to raise £50,000. I am looking to raise £2,500 to contribute to this target. I am doing this event with the guys shown above who also have their own Justgiving pages, so you may want to sponsor them as well or instead, either way we will all be very grateful.
All those taking part have covered all their own costs so all monies raised will go to charity.
Any monies you can give either corporately or individually will be gratefully received. To date the group have raised about £60,000 given or pledged. I am really pleased with how much I have raised so far, but if you can help, please donate as much as you can to my page.
Best wishes and thank you
