Coast 2 Coast Walk

After a few beers a nice meal a generous amount of red wine the question posed seemed more than just a question, it seemed more like a challenge. Would you be up for the Coast to Coast Walk? Now not being the kind of person to resist a challenge my reply was almost an instant yes. Having had some minor successes in the walking division, notably the 3 Peaks (24 Hour Challenge) albeit when I was a few years younger, and more recently completing the Wirral Walk (15 miles) around the Wirral coastline. I thought the Coast to Coast Walk would be quite manageable. Walking from one coastline of the Wirral to the other side of the Wirral seemed well within my comfort zone. Gazing into the bottom of my glass of red wine I was wondering whether we would start at the River Mersey side or the River Dee side. Not that it would make much difference, I was in.

Asked again at breakfast the following morning whether I was still up for the Coast to Coast Walk I confidently confirmed my commitment.

Shock and horror gripped me in the pit of my stomach when my friend started to outline the route and the timetable for completion of the Coast to Coast Walk. Starting at St Bees in Cumbria on the west coast walking 190 miles across the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales and finishing in Robin Hoods Bay on the east coast 11 days later. Yes 190 miles, an average of 18 miles a day.

So unable to wriggle out of this one, accommodation has been booked, 9 overnight stays in Pubs and 1 night in a guest house, over the road from a Pub with the accommodation looking as much of a challenge as the walk.
We start the walk on the 1st August.

This walk is a personal challenge that I really am looking forward to. Using the opportunity to raise some money for such a worthy cause as Claire House Childrens Hospice makes the whole thing even more worthwhile and will keep me focused when those blisters start to bite.

I have set a modest target of £1000 that I would love to achieve in sponsorship and for every pound donated Scantec Personnel will match it doubling the amount raised. So no matter how large or small your donation it will be greatly appreciated and I thank you all in anticipation.

Regards

John Robinson
