Three Peaks Challange · 18 September 2010
Hi my name is Ben and I was very poorly 2 years ago with a brain tumour. Fortunately I was diagnosed at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital and transferred to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. I had to stay in hospital and my mum slept by my bed, however my dad had to make the long journey to ampthill with my brother and sister at the time when we all wanted to be together. My mum and dad were very tired and upset. Fortunately The Sick Childrens Trust came to help us and gave my family a room in Acorn house which is a home from home at Addenbrookes where families can stay free of charge.
The Sick Childrens trust provide accomodation for families who have a very sick child and need to be close by. My family and friends now want to raise money to help this charity continue to provide this much needed support. Please help my family and friends reach their target of £10,000 so children who have cancer or require intensive care can have their mum and dad, brothers and sisters stay close by. It costs the charity £25 a night to accomodate a family. Due to demand some parents do not get this accomodation, help me make this situation a thing of the past and enable families to be together when they need it most. Barclays bank have also kindly agreed to match what we raise penny for penny. How fantastic is that!
My mum and dad and their friends Craig, Ellen, Hugh and Auntie Hazel are always busy trying to raise money, Auntie hazel, mummy, and Alison climbed the three peaks of the peak district in 8 hours, so well done them. Ellen held a cake stall at the Ampthill gala and my mum organised a charity strawberry high tea on the 16th July. My dad completed the Yorkshire three peaks in 10hours(July) and Alemeda School also held a cake stall in July organised by Mr Jennings. So a big thankyou to everyone for helping us. Alemeda Middle school and the Firs lower school have also made donations over the past year so a big thankyou to everyone who is helping me reach our goal.
Last year we climbed Snowdon ,my brother James and sister Sophie, their friends Harry,Erin,Emily and another Harry(my friend) all put on their walking boots and climbed the mountain with a few adults trailing behind!! The children organised the whole trip, and between them have managed to raise £850 so far. Wow what an achievement, next year its Scarfell in the lake district.
Barleys bank have also matched us pound for pound on some of the events and have donated over £1000. So a big thankyou to them too.
On the 13th April 2013, our family, cousins and friends the Ashbys, Devereuxs, Craig Kenny, Kirsty and Jim and Ben all climbed the three yorkshire peaks. We had two teams, the fast team with my dad, Auntie Hazel, Uncle Guyand Ellen with the older children and my mum in team two with the younger children, team leader Craig, kirsty and Ann. the day started off in brilliant sunshine and we all climbed Pen-y-ghent together. Then we split into two teams. Unfortunately to cut along story short the weather dramatically closed in whilst my mums team were on Whernside and my dads team were on Ingleborough.
Through 80 mile winds , snow, ice , freezing rain ,thick cloud , fog and eventually for team one darkness we managed to complete this adventure. After team one amazingly completed all three peaks the elements took hold and the mountain rescue team came out to rescue them in the fog and total darkness. They were very brave, cold and wet. Team two had completed two peaks in the same conditions and were also wet cold and incredibley brave but could not complete the third peak as there was no time and the weather was too dangerous.
All the adults and children on this trip were amazing, not one moan or wish to turn back, the occassional tear which was over come with laughter. Well done to this amazing team and thankyou to everyone for supporting us and of course the yorkshire mountain rescue team.
Whats next !! no mountains thats for sure ! watch this space and come along to all the planned events
Hopefully in time I will achieve my goal and a big thankyou to you for taking time out to read my just Giving site.
A big thank you Love Ben xxxxxxx
