My New Challenge – Cycling Vietnam For Newborns
(Scorri giù per la versione in Italiano)
Cycling round the world was a massive mental and physical challenge, but one of the things which kept me going at the lowest points was knowing there was an end and keeping that finish line in sight. There are people out there who we never hear about, doing extraordinary things tirelessly day after day, year after year, without reward or recognition. These are the real heroes.
Every day doctors and nurses working in resource-poor environments in 3rd world countries face incredible challenges and nowhere is this more evident than at the very beginning of life. Globally over 3.1 million babies die every year, the majority in poor countries. Worldwide there is a critical shortage of trained health workers and nurses. More newborns would survive if appropriately trained nurses cared for them.
All over the world organisations and individuals are doing amazing things to reduce newborn deaths.
I am getting back on my bike to bring international nursing expertise to a newborn care unit in central Vietnam to help some extraordinary doctors and nurses fulfill their dream to give better care to every newborn. Who knows what these babies may grow up to become!
