Bumblebees are in decline because of a loss of their habitats. Our landscape is changing, over 97% of the UK's grasslands have been lost in the past 70 years. We work to put much needed flowers back into the countryside to benefit our bumblebees and other wildlife.

Story

So an incredibly unfit group of us; Ben Kirkby, Dave Gatcum, Jason Threadgill, have decided to do the South West Coastal Path walk from Hengistbury Head, Christchurch, to (and around) Portland Bill. This is a distance of 101km (63 miles) which we aim to do in 24 hours.

We've realised that we spent way too much time and effort bemoaning the things that we're all passionate about and have instead directed that energy into doing something much more constructive and positive. Want change, be change.

We've decided to pick a charity that is slightly different. The Bumblebee Conservation Trust for a couple of reasons.

1) Bee populations are massively in decline. I think we take for granted the importance pollinators play in nature. There is a symbiotic dependency between fauna and life, and pollinators really are the foundation of that relationship that forms the beauty and variety in we see in nature. However, Bees are mainly under threat because of the changes to the countryside in the UK, and changes in agricultural techniques, alongside the introduction of pesticides, which have led to far fewer wild-flowers in the landscape.

2) Our towns and cities need more nature and vibrancy. Brambles, nettles and weeds reign on road verges and unused urban spaces. Local Councils are getting better at planting strips of wild flowers, but this needs to evolve from strips, to gardens, fields, and meadows.

It's in societal interest, both empathetic and economical to care and get involved. It's simple, cheap and easy for everyone to make a significant difference.
