Race for Life Bristol 5k 2014 · 6 July 2014 ·
Charlie, myself and some wonderful friends are all entering the RFL again this year. Training has been rather sporadic at best. Four years ago when we first entered my 6 year old was a great excuse to walk some of the race, now the roles have reversed his 41 year old mum is the real reason for our slower sections!!
We enjoy our training runs and can be seen huffing and puffing our way around Stoke Bishop, often with Charlie running ahead and literally running rings around me. We enjoy each others company and that is why we run. I am so blessed to be here and I fought really really hard to get through my treatment and my ups and downs. Like everyone cancer has touched our lives and continues to be an unwelcome threat and indeed as a family we have lost treasured members and have dear friends still battling.
Going over the finishing line hits hard every year I can't hold back the tears. " Life is not about waiting for the rain clouds to pass, it is about learning how to dance in the rain."
Please support us as we all take time out to focus on laughter, singing and huffing and puffing our way around the Downs this Sunday. K&C xx
My Story:
I have a time line of living with and post cancer, The Big C. For us that is Charlie.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer when C was 10 weeks old. The news was devastating and impossible to process given the beautiful baby boy who was also in the room with myself and Keith. What would this mean for all of us? Surgery, Chemo, Radiotheraphy followed and we weren't over it, another diagnosis of a new cancer a year later and we started all over again. This was the beginning of a marathon Keith would tell me, not a sprint. He was right. We had the Away team my doctors, nurses, medical support and the Home team, my family, friends and councilling groups. God, well I think he sits on both teams. With out these people my journey would have been very different. You get out what you put in and when you have nothing left to put in, others pick you up and continue to put in for you.
Our story is thank fully full of life and fantastic memories, yes dreadful ones too but the balance lies in favour of the great people that we have met, the enriched experiences that we have had as an extended family group and the fact that Charlie regularly states " Life is for living".
Charlie and I are entering this race to say thank you to all of the above and also for our friends and family members who continue to live life to the full with cancer.
