Story
The Covid-19 pandemic has had a catastrophic effect on charities, with the cancellation of thousands of events and the loss of in income. At a time when vulnerable members of society need them most, charities have had to cut services, furlough staff and some have even shut down. Captain Tom stepped up to help, taking on his famous walk to support the NHS Covid-19 appeal and inspiring millions to donate to the cause. I will be celebrating the extraordinary spirit of Captain Tom my way and help my chosen charity- Universify Education.
Inequality and poor social mobility in the UK affect every aspect of life for young people experiencing disadvantage. Before they have a chance to make decisions about their future, a student’s background (family income, ethnicity, where they live and where they go to school) determines how likely they are to go to university.
Universify Education exists to further educational equality in the UK by making Higher Education open to anyone with academic potential, regardless of their background.
As a trustee for Universify I have witnessed first-hand the tireless efforts of staff to maintain operations and to keep reaching as many young people as possible. On Sunday 2nd May I am going to practice 100 sun salutations (without stopping) to raise money for Univerisify. A year ago this wouldn't have sounded like much of a challenge but I had a baby 8 months ago!
