Royal Parks Half Marathon 2009 · 11 October 2009 ·
As someone allergic to exercise, I attempted my first 10km run last year and it was a huge personal achievement. This year I am doubling the stakes by attempting my first half marathon - eeekkk!
The reason for this out of character behaviour is my gorgeous nephew Kyle, who was born with a condition called Tracheo-Oesophageal Fistula (TOF) and had a major operation at just 24 hours old to attach his throat to his stomach. Following this operation, Kyle had several stints in hospital after incidents when he stopped breathing and had to be resuscitated. The local hospitals were unable to make a diagnosis over several months and the 'dying spells' contiuned. Eventually my sister and her husband put their faith in the hands of the amazing doctors at Great Ormond St Hospital (GOSH) via a self referral. Within 4 days Kyle was diagnosed with severe Tracheomalacia (a side affect of the TOF) and had a life saving operation to stop his windpipe continuing to collapse, the cause of the 'dying spells'. He came out of the operation the little fighter he is and has continuned to amaze doctors with his strength and development.
Unfortunately, Kyle also has scoliosis, a severe S-shaped curve in his spine (another side effect of the TOF), causing his back to bend to the left. He will undergo several surgical procedures at GOSH throughout his childhood to straighten his spine, which will hopefully enable him to live a normal childhood, playing sports etc. He also has incidents of choking and has a limited diet, another side effect of his TOF condition, which he continues to have monitored at GOSH.
Kyle, along with thousands of other children under the care of GOSH, are given the chance of a quality of life they weren't born with. Please give any pennies you can spare to support this amazing cause, as I will be suffering a great deal of agony in the name of the children!! :-)
So please sponsor me now and thank you in advance for your generosity!!
