I'm taking part in the inaugural
Ride Across
Britain.cycle ride from
John O'Groats to Land's End on 12 June 2010. I
will be covering 1,008 miles in nine days, averaging 112 miles per day riding beside James Cracknell and several of the members of the team that will be representing GB at paralympics in 2012. There
will be no comforts on the way, camping each night for a crack of dawn start
the following morning.
I've been training for this over the
last six months, with much encouragement from the Chichester spinning
group at the Westgate Leisure Centre and the Southdown velos, who were wonderfully
supportive when I crashed in the midst of them to be carted off to hospital bruised
and unfortunately with a broken arm. I was then informed by the consultant
that it would be weeks before I could get back on a bike. Little did he know!
With three weeks of trying to be sensible, training resumed and I am now
enjoying the warmer, dryer weather and the challenge ahead of me.
This is a wonderful personal
challenge but I would also like to take the opportunity to raise money for
beat.
beat is a charity for people with eating disorders. These affect 1.6
million people in the UK. You will almost certainly know someone who has
suffered or is suffering from an eating disorder. Its impact on sufferers and
family life is immense. It’s a life-threatening
condition and many are left with long-term medical problems.
beat provides
help lines, online support, UK-wide network of self-help groups and organises conferences. Locally there is a carer's group in
CHICHESTER that provides an outlet for families
that are caring for members with an eating disorder. Along with raising much need funds for beat, I hope I can help to raise the awareness of this local group so that more families can benefit from its support and not be left to suffer in silence.
I have self funded my participation
in the Ride Across Britain, so
all money donated will go to
beat.
It will make all the training and bike ride so much more rewarding if I know
that I have managed to help this very worthwhile charity. So thank you for your
donation.
Donating through JustGiving is
simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving—they’ll
never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your
money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every
eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate—I
raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
