Story
Thank you for visiting Katie's page.
Katie was born into our family in February 2006. A beautiful bright baby girl who lit up the room and our hearts with her huge smile and happy eyes. She was truly amazing and we thought she was a little genius!
Just 5 months later we found out that she had a condition (SMA Type I),that meant she would not live past her first birthday. Spinal Muscular Atrophy has varying degrees and is a muscle wasting condition, resulting in mobility, feeding and breathing difficulties.
Just six weeks after receiving this diagnosis Katie died.
Throughout this difficult time we have been very fortunate to have had an abundance of continuing support from our family and friends and also the support of an organisation called the Jennifer Trust who have provided us with invaluable emotional and practical support, equipment, toys for Katie and a network of families who are also affected in the same way.
The Jennifer Trust is the only organisation in the UK that provide this help. They have been phenomenal.
By way of saying thank you to them and to try and help them continue the wonderful work they do, we organised a sponsored walk to raise money for Katie's Angel fund, which was set up in memory of Katie with the Jennifer Trust.
Katie's walk took place on Sunday 8th June 2008 at Trent Park. It was a beautiful day and all of the people taking part completed the walk in under an hour (even the little ones!).
At Trent Park, public interest was amazing and we even received donations from passers by on the day. After Katie's Walk we had a lovely picnic and games afterwards.
Paul, Thomas and I want to say a big Thank You to everyone that took part and helped run the event. Special Thank you's to Kelly, Irene and Gina C for being first aiders (no injuries thank goodness) and to Paul P and Eponine for helping plan the route. Thanks also to my sister Gina and dear friends Pip, Maria, Eleni and Xenia, for putting up with my mania in the lead up to the event !
Most of all - thank you to EVERYONE in helping us to reach and exceed our fundraising target. We are now in the process of picking the star which will be named in memory of Katie.
Even though this event has passed and we are likely to run another fundraiser next year, the Jennifer Trust continue to support families affected by SMA so donations are always welcome. If you would like to make a donation please click on the 'sponsor me now' link.
Thank you
