Kev and Mike have teamed up again following their successful and ultra-abusive 100km ultra marathon for Blind Veterans in 2017 (it is said they started arguing after mile 2 and didn’t stop till the end)
So, for 2018, they are running across the Sahara Desert in what has been described as “the toughest foot race on earth”. (Mike told Kev it was a one day event in Southport)
-The Marathon De Sables -
An event that will see 1200 international runners from 89
countries, carry all the equipment required on their backs, to self-support themselves for 8 days whilst running over 250Km across the blistering hot sand dunes in 100-degree heat. Enduring not only the inhospitable conditions of the Sahara, but also the sweaty stench of each other for 8 days, living and loving in a Bedouin tent, complete with the endless wonder of hours of putting the world to rights. Inevitably violence will ensue and camels will be stolen.
Both Kev and Mike served in the British Army with distinction, Kev
is the mild mannered and tall one, and Mike the loud and obnoxious one, both hail from the north and Scotland, a country steeped in simplicity and gentile folk. Deploying all over the world on operations during their careers, they lost friends on active service and through suicide as a result of mental illness when returning from combat.
Having friends killed, and seeing the outcomes for their children left behind, is a deeply upsetting part of this process. The separation of a young child from his or her daddy as a result of armed conflict is a violent and abhorrent affair, it is raw with longing and an unfathomable pain for a young child. No child, no mother, no family should go through this alone.
The charity Scotty's Little Soldiers plays a vital role in supporting families who are bereaved. Kevin met Nikki Scott the founder shortly after she launched the charity, after losing her husband and father to her children, Cpl Lee Scott. She is a remarkably courageous woman, winning The Sun’s Millie for her awe-inspiring endeavors.
The charity’s assistance is divided into 3 distinct programmes. ‘Smiles’ offers the children that opportunity to smile again through a wide range of fun activities and gifts. This includes holiday breaks, group events, special experiences and gifts at difficult times of the year.
The ‘Support’ programme aims to assist with the more emotional side of bereavement and includes access to professional counselling and a family support network.
Finally, the ‘Strides’ programme is designed to help with the charity’s beneficiaries’ personal development and includes a range of activity and educational grants.
We are aware charitable war fatigue has set in, we know many of the battles of yester-year are behind us. But please remember, there are hundreds of children growing up today in this country without a daddy and mummy. We ask you to support this most worthwhile charity with all your might, all you give goes directly to providing holidays and support as described above.
All cash raised on Justigiving goes 100% to Scotty's, but **£500 each has already been given to our secondary regimental charities, (you can donate more and privately to the regimental charities below)
