Ironman 70.3 Galway · 2 September 2012
At 7am on 2 September John and I will be standing on a chilly beach in Galway Bay trying to remain calm whilst dressed in neoprene waiting to go for a swim in the sea with 2000 other people. This will be the start of a 70.3 mile half ironman journey around Galway. The event begins with a 1.2 mile swim in the “crystal clear waters of Galway Bay”, followed by a 56 mile cycle and finally a not so gentle 13.1 mile run.
To make this event a little less (early) mid life crisis and far more worthwhile we’re raising money for one of our favourite charities, the TLC children’s home in Johannesburg South Africa.
TLC was established in April 1993 by the Jarvis family to rescue abandoned or orphaned babies and children in and around the Johannesburg area. In addition to providing for the physical, developmental and emotional wellbeing of the children in their care, their primary ethos is that "every child has the right to a loving and responsible family". They will try firstly to reunite the children with their birth family. If they cannot be returned to the birth family they will place a child with carefully chosen adoptive parents. Occasionally a family cannot be found for a child outside of TLC often due to health issues (including some living with HIV AIDS). In order to make good the commitment to every child to provide a forever family, these children will be adopted by the Jarvis family.
Further information on TLC’s amazing children’s home may be found on their website www.tlc.org.za. Every pound will go far in South Africa and as a small charity with limited administrative costs any money you are able to give will directly assist in caring for the children in TLC’s care.
