Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-shortening genetic condition that slowly destroys the lungs and digestive system. The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the only UK-wide charity fighting for a life unlimited, when everyone living with CF can look forward to a long, healthy life. www.cysticfibrosis.org.uk

Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page. A group of my friends, family, aswell as my fiance and I are climbing Ben Nevis on the 18th July 2009. for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Cystic fibrosis or CF, is an inherited disease of the secretory glands. The mucus produced by these glands becomes sticky and thick as a result of the disease.

The mucus builds up in the lungs and blocks the airways. The build up of mucus is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. This leads to repeated, serious lung infections. Over time, these infections can severely damage the lungs.

The thick, sticky mucus also can block tubes, or ducts, in the pancreas. As a result, the digestive enzymes that your pancreas makes can't reach the small intestine. This means that the body can not absorb fats and proteins leading to vitamin deficiency and malnutrition because nutrients leave the body unused.

CF sufferers have an increased risk of diabetes or a bone-thinning condition called osteoporosis. CF can also cause infertility in males and make falling pregnant increasingly harder for females.

My father suffers from cystic fibrosis and  I carry the gene. If my partner also carries the gene there is a risk that our children may inherit CF.

There are currently under 200 people with the disease that have survived beyond the age of 40 years old! I and a few of my friends are climbing this mountain to raise money for the trust that has helped my dad and my family for so long. The CF Trust is hoping to use gene therapy to remove this BAD gene and therefore  help suffers to live longer, healthier lives an eventually phase out the gene conpletely.
