Story

Thanks so much for taking the time to visit our Just Giving page!

Please read below for more detail on why Diabetes UK is such an important charity.

Special love to Calvin Pearson, Katie Lamb and Matt Winnington

Di
d you know that diabetes affects more people than cancers and dementia combined... yet only 17% of people think that diabetes is serious. This means people are many times less likely to donate to the charities which support it.

  • 4.7 million people in the UK have diabetes
  • The NHS spends at least £10 billion a year on diabetes - (10% of its ENTIRE budget)
  • People with diabetes are twice as likely to suffer from depression
  • 500+ people with Diabetes die prematurely each week

Due to the lack of understanding from the public, it is so important to increase knowledge and raise awareness of its seriousness.

The basics:

Diabetes is a condition where someone has too much glucose in their blood. People without diabetes have their blood sugar levels controlled by insulin produced in their pancreas. If someone has diabetes, they’re either not producing insulin, or the insulin they do produce can’t work properly. This means that sugar builds up in their blood and can’t be used elsewhere for fuel. Too much sugar in the blood can lead to sight loss, amputation, kidney failure, stroke and death.

Weekly, the condition leads to over 170 amputations, 680 strokes, and 2,000 heart failures.

Type 1 develops when the insulin-producing cells in the body have been destroyed and the body is unable to produce any insulin. Everyone with Type 1 needs to inject insulin and monitor their blood sugar every day for the rest of their lives.

Type 2 develops when the body still makes some insulin but it’s not able to work properly. Some people can manage it with a healthy diet, but it is likely they could end up on medication.

So please donate to the UK's leading diabetes charity to enable them to provide continued care, support, and research.

Thank you xxxx
