Cardiff Half Marathon 2015 · 4 October 2015 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am Lee Morgan, aged 24. I am a University of South Wales student and will be running the Cardiff Half Marathon on probably what will be a cold October day later this year.

Inspired by my grandmother Eirwen, who suffers badly with dementia after a rapid decline in health, I hope to raise money for much-needed research and further care for dementia patients. You can find more information on Alzheimers and Dementia here: http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/

This is my first attempt at a half marathon and I hope to break the 2 hour barrier first time. All your support and donations to a great cause will help my achieve my goal i'm sure.

My goal is £1,000. Anything you can give on the way to that target will be hugely appreciated.

To give you an idea of what the money is used for:

£12.50 supports an hour of research on one of their pilot projects, the proving ground for the latest ideas in dementia research and the projects that inspire the major studies of tomorrow.

£20 will pay for an hour of research for a PhD student, the next generation of scientists coming into the dementia field.

£40 will pay for twenty GP mailing packs, getting the latest dementia information out into the community and helping up to 200 families understand more about the condition

£50 covers the cost of a lumbar puncture for a person taking part in a research study, a crucial component of clinical study important to establishing disease progress and the effectiveness of new treatments.

£65 will provide the tools to extract and analyse the DNA from 25 blood samples, helping identify new risk genes for the diseases that cause dementia and providing vital clues for treatment development.

£90 will buy a chemical kit to help scientists detect and study rogue proteins involved in diseases like Alzheimer’s

£125 will provide the tools for scientists to map 5000 genes in minute detail, unlocking the secrets of how genes play a role in disease risk and identifying new ways to prevent dementia

£250 will buy an antibody, used by scientists to detect the proteins that go awry in diseases like Alzheimer’s and providing clues to stopping, preventing or halting the damage

£400 will pay for a sensitive detection kit to help scientists search blood samples for amyloid, an important protein involved in Alzheimer’s disease and a key target for treatment development.

£1000 will pay for reagents, unique chemicals that are crucial for successfully growing cells in a laboratory ready for disease study.

£2000 will allow researchers to buy synthetically made amyloid, to better understand this hallmark Alzheimer’s protein in the lab.
