Kenya Orthopedic Project · 2 November 2012
This is where I tell you a bit about myself and why I need your help raising money.
I work for the NHS in Torbay, Devon as a Diagnostic Radiographer and have done for 3 years now. This is my first time volunterring as part of the MEAK Kenya Orthopaedic Project volunteering my services as a Radiographer.
KOP is a non-profit making organisation which works with government run hospitals in Kenya to provide a Trauma and Orthopaedic service.
On 2nd November 2012 I am off to Mombasa Coast General Hospital for ten days with a team of NHS professionals including, surgeons, anaesthetists, scrub nurses and physiotherapist to provide a trauma and orthopaedic service carrying out orthopaedic operations on children, adults and the elderly. We will be working long hours each day so that we can do as many operations as we can.
I will have to self-fund (via fundraising) the costs of flights and accomodation as all the money donated by the sponsors of the project will go directly towards paying for surgical equipment, anaesthesia and analgesia for the patients. We use our own annual leave allowance for the trip so it will not effect the NHS :D
The healthcare system in Kenya is very limited. Without the luxury of a National Health Service, healthcare for most Kenyans is unattainable. The aim of our KOP mission is to help impoverished patients receive the operations they need, which can be life saving and life changing surgery. Needy patients are identified and treated for free by the KOP team.
Orthopaedic surgery is expensive and with the average Kenyan wage being just over a pound a day, patients with traumatic injuries cannot afford the necessary operations or treatment. As manual work is the mainstay of the family income, a person who is left with a physical deformity, permanant pain or no use of the affected limb cannot provide for their family.
Please help and sponsor me in my attempts to raise the £980
