Story

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor us online.

So how did Bruce, Dermot, Gary and Rob get to this point, a Half Iron Man, essentially a  1.9km Open Water Swim followed by a 90km Bike Ride and finished with a 21km Run? In 2006 I was introduced to Dermot with the challenge of getting him fit to complete the 2006 London Triathlon. Assisted by my colleague, Gary Hickling, Dermot trained at theHealth Club at One Aldwych, taking full use of its gym and pool and the odd massage in the treatment room!

Training progressed well with Dermot responding to technique changes in the pool and building endurance and speed on the bike and run. Unfortunately due to serious illness, Dermot had to pull out from the 2006 event. This strengthened his determination to complete the 2007 event, this time accompanied by Gary and me. It was at this point that all of us began to train and a fourth person was introduced to the group,Rob Thesiger, new to fitness and even fresher to triathlons!

So the London Triathlon date came and all credit to Dermot it was a fine first effort with a great result on the bike. In the midst of excitement, there was a moment of madness where we all agreed to participate in the Lisbon Half Iron Man triathlon.

It won’t be easy – the Half Iron Man poses a number of physical and mental challenges. Firstly, training to build stamina and endurance to complete the course. Secondly, comfortable equipment and clothing as you will be spending at least 5 hours in the same clothing, and sitting on a bike for possibly 2.5 hours. Lastly, nutrition:  it is not advisable to complete this event with out consuming fluids and solids during the event.

Our work is cut out – training sessions have become more intense and there is plenty of banter on who will finish last! I look forward to your support as we put ourselves through an epic event on the way to completing the ultimate challenge, the full Iron Man, at the end of the year. Most importantly, we are raising money for  Save the Children, a charity that fights for the fundamental rights of health, freedom from hunger, protection and education for children all over the world.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Save the Children will receive your money faster and, if you are a taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks for your support.
