We support people with dementia in Scotland to make sure nobody faces dementia alone

Story

Hi and welcome to my first fundraising page!

My name is Ela and I will be running the London Marathon 2012 to help raise funds to support Alzheimer Scotland Charity (http://www.alzscot.org). The London Marathon is the largest annual fundraising event on the planet and a major sport event, so I am very excited to be part of it!

I started to run at the age of 46. My first big challenge was the marathon in Barcelona in 2010. It was an amazing experience that continued as my passion. So far, I’ve run Marathon in Loch Ness, and Amsterdam this year. I also took part in charity and fun runs like Glasgow Santa Dash 2010.

After taking part in several runs, I felt I wanted to do something more. I feel extremely thankful and grateful that I am able to run as I get so much enjoyment out of it both mentally and physically. I always wanted to use my passion to help others, so I decided to run my first marathon for charity.

The London Marathon will take place on the 22nd April 2012 and it will be my first one on behalf of The Alzheimer Scotland Charity. My reason for running is simply to help others by raising awareness and money for this charity.

Alzheimer Scotland helps people with dementia, their carers and families. They provide a wide-range local services and I want to support the amazing work that they do in improving quality of life for people with dementia and their carers. Since coming to work and live in Scotland 5 years ago with my family, I have engaged with the website and have on occasion used their free helpline in gaining support. I have a strong belief in Alzheimer Scotland’s slogan: Making sure no –one goes through dementia on their own.

Dementia is an illness which affects the brain, causing a progressive loss of mental powers. It is the fourth biggest killer for women in Scotland and the ninth for men. Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementias are the most common forms of the illness, but there are many other conditions which can also cause dementia.
Almost everyone knows someone who is affected - it may be a relative, friend, neighbour or workmate who has the illness or who is caring for someone. This illness affect everybody as caring can be a 24 hour, seven day a week task, and is often emotionally, physically and financially draining.

The London Marathon run will be a part of my several personal projects, which I hope to fullfill this and upcoming year in order to help raise awareness of dementia and the Alzheimer Scotland Charity´s work.
You will be able to check them on my Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/londonmarathon2012withela

I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

I would also like to invite you all to London. It is an amazing experience to be part of this event for both spectactors and runners.

Thank you so much for your generous support and hope to see you on the streets of London,
Ela
