Story
During the first performance of The London Requiem at Abney Park on 29th September 2012 we created an avenue of remembrance with 200 white balloons. We raised £200 on the night towards a memorial for the 173 victims of the Bethnal Green Tube disaster in 1943. Combined with the money raised on this site we now have over £400 but would dearly like to get the total up to £500 before we close this page. Please make a small donation to help us reach that target. If you would like to see a recording of the requiem, go to www.thespace.org and you can visit www.benjamintill.com to purchase a CD of the music.
On the night of 3rd March 1943, 300 people were making their way into Bethnal Green Tube Station to take cover after the air raid siren sounded. the noise of an anti-aircraft gun in nearby Victoria Park spread alarm and on the slippery steps of the station a woman holding her child stumbled. The ensuing crush killed 173 people, who until recently have been remembered only with a tiny plaque. The Stairway to Heaven Memorial has been designed by Harry Paticas to provide a suitable, large-scale commemoration of the disaster. It has been partially built and our aim is to help the Trust complete the memorial in time for the 70th anniversary of the disaster next year.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe, and if you would like to make your donation in memory of someone, please include the name and dates of the person you want to remember. You can provide that in the comment box after you have donated.
