Starting this March, I'll be taking part in a six-month 'Global Xchange' programme, that will see me spending three months in Plymouth and three months in Bolgatanga, in North Ghana. In both locations, I will be working alongside other young people from both the UK and Ghana, to promote social inclusion and active citizenship in a number of ways.

A bit more about how Global Xchange works:

Global Xchange is a volunteering programme for young people aged 18-25 coordinated by Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) and the British Council. It aims to inspire active global citizens to work together to create positive change and build mutual understanding and respect, both locally and internationally. Six-month exchanges take place between the UK and various countries across Asia and Africa, with three months spent in working both countries. The team of volunteers is made up of young people from both the UK and the exchange country, who live and work together in counterpart pairs, staying with local host families. Volunteers make a positive contribution by working with local community organisations, as well as coordinating larger scale community events as a whole team.

It costs VSO around £6500 to send a volunteer on the programme, however volunteers are only asked to fundraise a contribution of £600 towards the organisation's work.
