We believe decent homes are the heartbeat of strong communities and so we also fight for land rights for women, upgrade urban slums and informal settlements, improve access to water and sanitation, and help communities become more resilient in the face of natural disasters.

Story

Hello there, and thank you for visiting my fundraising webpage.

My name's Louise, and in April 2009, I'll become part of a team of volunteers heading off to a remote part of Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa to build homes for children in desperate need of shelter and security.

Its hard to imagine the forgotten parts of Africa where entire communities exist in sub-standard, inhumane and dangerous living conditions. Their mud and wattle homes are in a perilous state of repair, and the lack of access to toilets, clean water and electricity is having a detrimental effect on the health & wellbeing of the children - 11 million of which are now orphaned as a result of HIV AIDS.

Bereaved and vulnerable, these children grow up deprived of their basic rights to food, health, education and shelter - the kind of everyday experiences we thoughtlessly take for granted.

But with your help, our team of volunteers will visit Africa, and help build strong brick houses for those children in greatest need.  Our tasks will include digging foundations, mixing concrete, and laying blocks for walls, working alongside skilled local builders and with the family or carer who will occupy the property.

In addition, any sponsorship we raise will be used to buy building tools and materials for the local community, so that our work may continue for many years after we have left.

So please dig deep and give all you can to help these extremely deserving people, who have neither the funds, nor the resources to help themselves.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me as Habitat for Humanity will receive your money faster.  And, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.  :-)

Many thanks for your valued support.
