Story

Dear friends,

Thank you for visiting our Justgiving fundraising page.

On October 2nd 2021, Luana and Louis will get married in Cascais, Portugal, and they would like to take this opportunity to raise funds for Don Bosco Child Labour Mission Davangere (www.dbclm.org), in Karnataka, South India, through the Salesians of Don Bosco UK.

Louis had the chance to work as a volunteer at DBCLM in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011, and has kept in touch with the centre since. These experiences impacted him greatly, and the cause and the children are extremely close to their heart.

DBCLM Davangere, created in 1996 by Father Kuriakose, has worked until today with child labourers and street children aged from 9 to 18. It is a rehabilitation centre for such children, who once worked in garages, in hotels, on construction sites, in farms, or simply who lived on the street off rag-picking and begging. The rehabilitation is principally achieved through education, and consists of a one-year Residential Bridge Course preparing the children to join government schools.

During the past 25 years, DBCLM Davangere has educated over 2200 children. Of these, more than 300 have pursued or are pursuing higher education, including three Bachelor's degrees in Engineering, two Master's degrees in Social Work, four Master's degrees in Communication, and two Master's of Arts.

The total cost per year per student is approximately £225. Today, DBCLM Davangere has 94 boys and girls, down from a few years ago when they had 120, primarily due to lack of funding support. DBCLM Davangere also works with women through self-help groups, in which they are taught how to save money for their family and for their children's education.

DBCLM's goal is to admit more children in the centre in order to have over 200 children, as well as continually improve the children's study and life conditions. Yet, it is difficult, as NGOs have considerably reduced their support and the government offers very little help. Their projects therefore rely primarily on private donations.

Thank you very much for your support, and keep in mind that every pound you give goes straight to the "Little Angels", without any administrative loss.

Once again, thank you!

It helps needy young people predominantly. Internationally, this is done through education, provision of shelter and accommodation, youth centres, parishes, aid work and missionary outreach. In Britain, work is done through provision of schools, youth chaplaincies, a residential youth retreat centre, parishes, youth centres and volunteering opportunities for young adults.
