Story

In February 2011, little old me along with 5 friends will be facing the challenge of climbing 5896m (19,340 ft) to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro...battling against altitude sickness and hopefully reaching the top on day 6.

Given that I (as my family have loved reminding me!) used to moan about going for a walk around the block...what on earth would make me to do this?

Simple...I'm doing it in memory of someone incredibly special - to raise money for the charity dedicated to the disease that tragiclly took this person from us.

As many of you know, I am a keen member of Bournville Musical Theatre Company and Phil Garner was our director...and much more than that besides.

Phil always managed to make people exceed their potential; he'd get more out of you than you ever thought was possible. With that in mind, this challenge seemed a particularly fitting tribute to him - it will stretch us all personally (physically and mentally!).

Phil was without doubt the most inspirational man I have ever had the privaledge of knowing. As well as being an incredible director and friend, Phil was also a celebrated cricketer, leading Oxfordshire to two counties cricket championships and becoming the first captain of the England Amateur XI.

To know him, work with him and be able to call him a friend was an honour.

He was diagnosed with a very agressive form of brain tumour (Glioblastoma Multiforme) in July 2009 and sadly died just 5 and a half weeks later.

The Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust (SDBTT) is dedicated to adult and childhood brain tumour research in the UK. Their aim is to raise awareness, support and funds for brain tumour research to help fight this devastating disease and give hope to brain tumour patients in the future. http://braintumourtrust.co.uk/

With Phil, the challenge ahead and the charity in mind... Please give generously!!
