Story
Lucy
Maizels, a junior doctor working in South London, has been selected
to take part the Polar Race 2011 which is proposed to be “probably the world’s
toughest race”. Less than 200 people have ever been to the artic and, if she is
successful, Lucy will be the first female doctor to have completed the race!
The race starts from Resolute Bay in the former North West Territories of
Canada and is 350 miles, depending on our navigation abilities! We ski or walk
across some of the most desolate terrain in the world, to reach the 1996
certified position of the Magnetic North Pole. The race will take place in
April 2011 and will last 15- 20 days. For further details of race visit www.polarrace.com.
I
am competing in this race to try and raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. It
is a charity that is sadly extremely close to my heart, as it supported my
family during the final weeks of my father’s life. Marie Curie is one of the
UK’s largest charities. It was established in 1948, the same year as the NHS,
and provides care to around 25,000 terminally ill patients a year, mainly those
suffering from cancer. Financially, around 70% of the charity’s income comes
from the generous support of thousands of individuals, membership organisations
and businesses, with the balance of their funds from the NHS.
I
would be grateful if you could support my efforts to reach the North Magnetic
Pole by donating money via this website. Although there are substantial
personal costs associated with this expedition, for which I am looking for
sponsorship, the money donated via this website will go entirely to Marie Curie
Cancer Care.
