Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Please note I'm running the North London Half not the Brighton half as the page says...
In spring 2015 our identical twin boys Jack and Dylan were born. We had a very difficult pregnancy, we were scanned every week and even
had surgery at one point due to a rare condition the boys got before they were born. Even though we were closely monitored, when they were both born we were hugely relieved but had a little surprise that Dylan was born without a right ear and a shorter jaw on one side. We now know the ear condition is called Microtia/atresia.
Due to Dylan being smaller and the missing ear and other conditions, he spent several weeks in special care and had many tests to see if the missing ear was linked to any other complications. He passed every test with flying colours!
With a challenging pregnancy and unsure of how Dylan's Microtia and other conditions would affect him in the future, those first few months were a very tough time for us. Through the teacher of the deaf we met Ali and other local families who were part of Microtia UK.
The information from the charity answered so many questions for us and meeting other families, adults and children with Microtia was an amazing support for us and still is.
Due to the Microtia, Dylan has a moderate hearing loss and wears
a bone anchored hearing aid to help with his speech and development. We are lucky with the area we live in and the advice from Microtia UK to make sure we can make informed choices for his future. Not all families have that guidance as not all professionals know about Microtia.
We are very lucky and grateful for Jack and Dylan who are both funny, smiley, lively little boys who make us smile every day.
So to say thank you to Microtia UK, and to show Jack and Dylan Daddy used to move more than to the fridge and car before they were born, I am running my first half marathon!!!
So if you want to see me in pain for over two hours then please be nice and donate to a great charity so other families and children can get the support we had.
So what is Microtia?
Microtia (Greek for ‘little ear’) is a malformation or misshape of the
external part of the ear (pinna) and can vary in severity from the
ear being smaller than expected to varying degrees of absence of the
outer ear. In some cases a smaller or incomplete ear canal and/or
hearing apparatus may be present or missing altogether (atresia).
Microtia is frequently accompanied by atresia because the baby’s outer ear and the ear canal develop together during pregnancy.
Microtia is a rare condition affecting about 1 in 6000 babies. It seems to affect more boys than girls and affects right ears more than left. Unilateral microtia (one ear) is more common, however approximately 1 in 10 children affected have bilateral microtia (both ears)
