Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-shortening genetic condition that slowly destroys the lungs and digestive system. The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the only UK-wide charity fighting for a life unlimited, when everyone living with CF can look forward to a long, healthy life. www.cysticfibrosis.org.uk

Story

Hiya,

My name is Luke Rhys Dennett. I am 4 years old.  In November, Aunty Chris (O'Sullivan)  ran the New York Marathon in under 5 hours, she was amazing!! Chris ran it to raise funds to help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis which is a genetic disease i suffer from. Unfortunately the really groundbreaking research that was happening into the genetics that cause my disease, is going to be stopped unless we all do our bit to help raise the £6 million needed to continue the research. If the research stops then my life expectancy is going to remain an average of 35 years of age.

My mum also ran the New York 5k dash the day before the big marathon, i know 5k isnt far but she had a knee operation and is really unfit, so 5k for her was like a marathon!!!!!

We are all really, really proud of them as they did brilliantly!!

Cystic Fibrosis is one of the UK's most common life-threatening inherited diseases and here are some facts about it.

  • Cystic Fibrosis affects over 9,000 of us in the UK.
  • Over two million people in the UK carry the faulty gene that causes Cystic Fibrosis - around 1 in 25 of the population.
  • If two carriers have a child, the baby has a 1 in 4 chance of having Cystic Fibrosis.
  • Cystic Fibrosis affects my internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, by clogging them with thick sticky mucus. This makes it really hard to breathe and digest food.
  • Each week, five babies are born with Cystic Fibrosis.
  • Each week, two young lives are lost to Cystic Fibrosis.
  • Only half of us living with Cystic Fibrosis are likely to live past their late 30s so help me do so.
