London Marathon 2018 · 22 April 2018 ·

We are Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. We stop at nothing to help give seriously ill children childhoods that are fuller, funner and longer. Because we believe no childhood should be lost to illness.

Story

I am running the London 2018 Marathon to mark the 21st birthday of Luke Reid. As many of you know he died in a car accident eight years ago this February. Many of you also know that he coped extremely well with a condition called Osteogenesis Imperfecta or Brittle Bone, for which he had pioneering treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital. You get to go to GOSH if your child has a life-threatening or obscure condition/illness; whilst none of us wants to be in that category, our experiences there were never anything other than positive, humbling and ultimately uplifting. Waiting outside a specialist's office and seeing the happy faces of children with life-limiting and chronic illnesses is etched on my mind for ever.

So I want to mark Luke's 21st birthday by raising money for this amazing hospital but also to provide an opportunity for anyone who wants to talk about and remember Luke to do that. I know it can be hard to talk about death but, honestly, for those close to the person who has died it is like they have for a moment come back to life.

It is totally out of character for me to do anything quite so physically demanding as running a marathon – I am a yoga girl at heart. So, unless I get the bug, this is a one-off fundraiser I am doing. Please dig deep and help this incredible hospital continue to do its job.
